What is R-Value?
The R-Value is a measure of thermal resistance, representing how well a material resists the flow of heat. It's widely used in the construction and building materials industry to evaluate the insulating efficiency of materials like walls, floors, and roofing components.
- Higher R-Value: Better insulation, which reduces energy costs by minimising heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.
- Lower R-Value: Less insulation, meaning heat flows more easily through the material, potentially increasing heating and cooling needs.
This is crucial in construction and energy-efficient design, as higher R-Value materials can improve thermal comfort and reduce energy costs by lowering heating and cooling needs.
The Role of R-Value in Flooring
As explained above, the R-Value, or thermal resistance, is a measure of a material’s ability to resist heat flow. In the context of flooring, System R-Value refers to the measure of thermal resistance for the entire flooring assembly, including all layers from the subfloor up to the finished floor surface including any air spaces. This value indicates how well the flooring system resists the flow of heat, helping to maintain indoor temperature and improve energy efficiency. The higher the System R-Value, the better the flooring system is at insulating a space.
For example, in floor systems with radiant barriers or specific insulation layers like STRUCTAflor Ultimate or other thermally resistant materials, the System R-Value will be higher. This can reduce heating and cooling costs by minimising temperature changes between floors and rooms.
